Early Life

Regina King, the daughter of Gloria Jean and Thomas Henry King Jr., was born in Los Angeles County, California, on January 15, 1971. In 1988, she received her diploma from Westchester High School. After two years, she left the University of Southern California to pursue her acting career, where she was studying communications.

Career

In 1985, she debuted as an actress in the TV show “227.” In 1995, she acted in the comedy film “Friday.” She starred as Mia in Martin Lawrence’s dark comedy-romance “A Thin Line Between Love and Hate” the next year. She also made an appearance in the critically acclaimed romantic comedy “Jerry Maguire.” For her performance in the movie “Enemy of the State,” she was nominated for her first N.A.A.C.P. Image Award in 1998 for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture.

In addition to starring in the sixth season of the TV show “24,” she made appearances in the 2007 motion pictures “This Christmas” and “Year of the Dog.” King made three appearances in the drama “American Crime” in 2015. King directed six episodes of the drama series “Being Mary Jane” between 2015 and 2017. In 2016, she directed two episodes of “Scandal” and one episode of each of “Animal Kingdom,” “This Is Us,” “The Catch,” and “Shameless.”

Because of her performance in “Seven Seconds,” she was awarded her third Primetime Emmy. She was recognized for her performance in the 2018 film “If Beale Street Could Talk” with a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. King directed “One Night in Miami…” in July 2019 and presented it at the Venice Film Festival in 2020, where it received widespread acclaim. Additionally, in October 2021, she was honored with the N.A.A.C.P. Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her performance in “The Harder They Fall.” King married actor and record producer Ian Alexander Sr. from 1997 to 2007.
