Richard Nixon Biography: Richard Milhouse Nixon, the 37th President of the United States, was born in Yorba Linda, California, on January 9, 1913. He began his legal career as an attorney in Washington, D.C.’s Office of Price Administration, where he witnessed firsthand the problems that government bureaucracy can cause. Nixon’s policies later in his political career were profoundly influenced by this event. Faced with the possibility of indictment for his involvement in the Watergate scandal, he resigned as the first president of the United States. He also served as vice president during the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Let’s celebrate his birthday by learning some fascinating facts about him.

Richard Nixon Family

Richard Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California, on his parents’ lemon ranch on January 9, 1913, and grew up in nearby Whittier. He was the second child of Hannah Milhous Nixon and Francis A. Nixon and the second of his brothers. Due to his family’s financial constraints, he had to forego his Whittier College scholarship before joining a local law firm. Nixon was commissioned in the United States as a naval officer. He was assigned to a South Pacific fighter station, first in Bougainville and then on Green Island. During his military service, he also learned to play poker, which quickly became one of his favourite activities. Nixon was persuaded by Whittier Republican leaders to run for a seat in the United States House of Representatives.

Nixon retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of lieutenant commander after a distinguished career. In the election to represent California’s 12th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives, he defeated five-term incumbent Democrat Jerry Voorhis. Nixon served as Vice President while General Eisenhower was elected President of the United States. In 1968, Nixon was elected as the 37th President of the United States. His foreign policy aimed to reduce international tensions by establishing new ties with former foes. He initiated the restoration of diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, implemented a détente strategy with the Soviet Union, and pushed for domestic measures such as the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency and the peaceful desegregation of public schools in the South.

In 1972, members of Nixon’s administration paid individuals to steal documents from Democratic Party offices at the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C., in the hopes of uncovering secrets that would help Nixon win reelection. Although the intruders were apprehended, the investigation did not move quickly enough to prevent Nixon’s 1972 reelection. Nixon and others attempted to conceal their involvement for an additional two years, but the Supreme Court’s intervention forced Nixon to produce secret audio recordings of his White House conversations, which established Nixon’s guilt. In 1974, he resigned from office. If he had not resigned, the House of Representatives would have impeached him or formally accused him of official misconduct. After leaving the White House, Nixon relocated to New York City, where he remained for the next twenty years. Eventually, he attempted to regain the trust of the public by writing books about government and politics. In the end, he was better known for his abuses of presidential power than for his achievements. Nixon passed away in New York City on April 22, 1994, and was interred in Yorba Linda, California, on April 27, 1994.
