Nixon was commissioned in the United States as a naval officer. He was assigned to a South Pacific fighter station, first in Bougainville and then on Green Island. In 1972, members of Nixon’s administration paid individuals to steal documents from Democratic Party offices at the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C., in the hopes of uncovering secrets that would help Nixon win reelection. Although the intruders were apprehended, the investigation did not move quickly enough to prevent Nixon’s 1972 reelection. Nixon and others attempted to conceal their involvement for an additional two years, but the Supreme Court’s intervention forced Nixon to produce secret audio recordings of his White House conversations, which established Nixon’s guilt. In 1974, he resigned from office. If he had not resigned, the House of Representatives would have impeached him or formally accused him of official misconduct. After leaving the White House, Nixon relocated to New York City, where he remained for the next twenty years. Eventually, he attempted to regain the trust of the public by writing books about government and politics. In the end, he was better known for his abuses of presidential power than for his achievements.
