His father was a Scottish master builder, Robert Joseph Stewart, and his mother was Elsie Rebecca Gilbart. As a child, he was an avid music enthusiast. His father, a music enthusiast, purchased Rod a guitar in 1959, when he was six years old. Stewart was a football aficionado as well. As he aged, so did his enthusiasm for music. Rod began associating with the folk musician Wizz Jones and playing the harmonica. In 1963, he joined The Dimensions, a band in which he played harmonica and occasionally sang.

Long John Baldry hired Stewart to play for his band in 1964 after seeing him play the harmonica. Stewart resigned his job to join the band of Long. At this point, he became a professional musician. Stewart made his music début in June 1964. Initially, he was unsigned, but by August he had signed a solo contract. In 1967, he received his big break when Jeff Beck hired him as a vocalist. In 1968, Beck’s band produced an album titled “Truth,” which performed well in the United States but not in the United Kingdom. 1969 saw the publication of Beck’s band’s second album, “Beck-Ola,” which also did well. At this point, however, Stewart no longer felt comfortable with the band, and he quit. He joined Faces in 1969 and was the group’s lead singer until its dissolution in 1975. In the 2000s, Stewart started songwriting after taking a break in the 1990s.

Stewart is a supporter of Manchester United F.C. and a car enthusiast who owns a large number of automobiles. Stewart has received titles from the Queen on two unique occasions.
