Roger Waters Birthday

Roger Waters, the lyricist, bassist, and leader of Pink Floyd, was born in Surrey on September 6, 1943. His childhood was spent in Cambridge, England. He was also engaged in sports, particularly swimming, in addition to music.

In 1965, Waters, Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright established the legendary British rock band Pink Floyd. Their debut album, “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn,” was released in 1967. In 1968, Syd’s deteriorating mental health compelled him to leave the band, and guitarist/singer David Gilmour took his place. Together with Waters, he produced critically acclaimed albums such as “Dark Side of the Moon,” “Wish You Were Here,” and “Meddle.” Waters ultimately took the wheel and assumed leadership of the band. Eventually, he rose to prominence as the primary author of successful albums such as “Animals,” “The Wall,” and “The Final Cut.”

In the 1980s, Waters and the band began to disagree, and they became estranged due to his controlling nature. He and Gilmour would argue over each other’s concepts, and during the recording of “The Wall,” he fired Richard Wright. Waters departed the band after the release of “The Final Cut” in 1983, the last album they recorded together. He then demanded the dissolution of Pink Floyd and sued the remaining members, including David Gilmour and Nick Mason, to prevent them from using the band’s name. His legal action was unsuccessful, and Pink Floyd proceeded to release albums without him. However, Waters was permitted access to his solo composition “The Wall.” After leaving Pink Floyd, he launched his solo career, releasing three albums that were not as successful as his Pink Floyd albums.
