Ronald Reagan Biography: The date of Ronald Wilson Reagan’s birth is February 6, 1911. From 1981 to 1989, he served as the 40th President of the United States. Reagan’s position makes him relevant for past, present, and future generations. Before becoming “Mr. President” or “Mr. Governor,” Ronald Reagan was an actor in Hollywood. His charisma, forthrightness, and diplomacy made him an excellent president.

Ronald Reagan will always be a household name in America and abroad. Reagan may have achieved success in the end, but he grew up in a poor family. Reagan was born on February 6, 1911, in Tampico, Illinois, to Nelle Clyde and Jack Reagan. His father was of Irish descent, while his mother was of English and Scottish descent. Thus, Reagan was of Irish, English, and Scottish descent. His father gave him the nickname ‘Dutch’ because he thought he resembled a ‘fat little dutchman’ for the duration of his childhood. Reagan was an Aquarius who was raised in a catholic, anti-racist home by a father who opposed the Ku Klux Klan openly. During his time at Dixon High School and Eureka College, he majored in economics and sociology. Reagan excelled in college politics, athletics, and theatre. His nickname reflected his versatility: “jack of all trades.”

After graduating from college in 1932, Reagan worked in radio. He had a seven-year contract with Warner Bros and made his debut in 1937’s “Love Is in the Air.” Reagan had appeared in 19 films by the end of 1939, as his acting career took off. His 1942 film appearance in “Kings Row” catapulted him to fame, and his weekly salary tripled to $3,000.
Reagan began his career in Hollywood as a Democrat. However, he became a Republican in 1962. Reagan was the campaign spokesperson for Goldwater in 1964, but he did not stop there. Reagan announced his candidature for governor of California in 1965, and he was sworn into office in January 1967. Reagan signed the Abortion Rights Act on June 14, 1967, and the Mulford Act prior to his re-election in 1970. The Family Law Act was signed during his second term as governor. He later referred to it as “his greatest regret in office.”

Reagan ran for president of the United States in 1976 but lost in the primaries. In 1980, he ran again against incumbent President Jimmy Carter. Reagan appointed George W. Bush, his primary opponent, as his running mate. His mandate as president was to reduce taxes, lessen government interference, stimulate economic growth, and bolster national defence. Reagan took the oath of office on January 20, 1981, at nearly 70 years of age. In March of the same year, he survived an attempted assassination. At the age of 73, he was re-elected president in 1984 and sworn into office in January 1985. Reagan facilitated economic changes, signed and later vetoed the Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1997, expanded the military, and contributed directly to the end of the Cold War during his presidency. Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 1994, a few years after his presidency ended. Reagan died of pneumonia on June 5, 2004, at the age of 93, after his mental capacity was gradually eroded by his illness. His wife, Nancy Davis, whom he met in 1949 as a divorcee, survived him. Before marrying Davis in 1952, he had three children from his marriage to Jane Wyman. Reagan and Davis had two children together.
