Roy Rogers Biography: Early Years

Roy Rogers, né Leonard Franklin Slye, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on November 5, 1911 to parents named Mattie and Andrew. Soon thereafter, he and his family purchased land in Portsmouth for the construction of a home before embarking on a houseboat journey there. The Great Flood of 1913, nevertheless, derailed those intentions, and the family was forced to reside on the property in their houseboat. The family subsequently relocated to a property near Lucasville in 1919. They organized and conducted their own amusement there by inviting the neighbors to square dances. Rogers’s aptitude for singing and yodeling was cultivated throughout this period. Rogers attended secondary school in McDermott before returning to Cincinnati to assist his father at a shoe factory. Later, the two individuals quit their employment and relocated to California to be near Mary Rogers, an older sister of theirs who had relocated to Lawndale with her spouse. In 1930, the family ultimately established residence in California.
