Salva Dut: Early Life

A lot of humanitarian efforts look up to Salva Dut. Dut was born in Southern Sudan on December 1, 1974. He is the son of Mawien Dut. During the civil war in Sudan in 1985, Dut was 11 years old when he and his family were split up. He was born in Africa and comes from a small village in the Dinka tribe.

A group of 17,000 boys called the “Lost Boys of Sudan” ran away to Ethiopia and Kenya during the war. Dut was one of them. He took about 1,500 of the lost boys from Ethiopia to the Kakuma refugee camp by going through Sudan. Dut spent six years living in a UN-run refugee camp before moving to the United States in 1996.

To pay for Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York, where Dut went to school, he worked three jobs. Dut finally got back together with his father in 2002, after being apart for 16 years. When he got back to Sudan, he found that his father was sick from water-borne diseases. This made him want to bring safe, clean water to South Sudan by raising money and digging wells. This is what led Dut to start Water for South Sudan in 2003 in Rochester, New York. Linda Sue Park wrote a biography of Dut called “A Long Walk to Water” in 2010. More than a million copies of the book have been sold around the world. Dut gave an emotional Ted Talk at TEDxBeaconStreet in Boston in 2016.

Even though he is married and has kids, Dut keeps his life very quiet. He works to teach and tell people about South Sudanese cities that are poor.
