Bland began posting videos, thoughts, and messages on various topics, including the mistreatment of African-Americans by police, at this time. Encinia initiated the traffic stop of Bland on July 10 for a minor traffic violation, which escalated into a heated exchange. She was arrested and charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer.

Bland was arrested and placed in a cell by herself at the Waller County Jail after being transported there. At 9:00 am on July 13, a female officer discovered Bland hanging in her cell.
