Sean Patrick Payton was born in San Mateo, California, on December 29, 1963. He was the quarterback for Naperville Central High School. He grew up in Naperville, Illinois. Sean Payton continued his football career at Eastern Illinois University, where he was successful and helped lead the Panthers to an 11-2 record and the Division 1-AA Playoffs quarterfinals in 1986.

Sean Payton was not selected in the 1987 NFL Draught, but the Kansas City Chiefs invited him to a one-day audition. Payton played quarterback for the Chicago Bruisers and the Pittsburgh Gladiators during the inaugural season of the Arena Football League before his rights were transferred to the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League. During the 1987 NFL players strike, he joined the Chicago Bears before joining the Leicester Panthers of the professional UK Budweiser National League in 1988.
