Early Years

Sean Patrick Payton was born in San Mateo, California, on December 29, 1963. He was the quarterback for Naperville Central High School. He grew up in Naperville, Illinois. Sean Payton continued his football career at Eastern Illinois University, where he was successful and helped lead the Panthers to an 11-2 record and the Division 1-AA Playoffs quarterfinals in 1986.

Sean Payton was not selected in the 1987 NFL Draught, but the Kansas City Chiefs invited him to a one-day audition. Payton played quarterback for the Chicago Bruisers and the Pittsburgh Gladiators during the inaugural season of the Arena Football League before his rights were transferred to the Ottawa Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League. During the 1987 NFL players strike, he joined the Chicago Bears before joining the Leicester Panthers of the professional UK Budweiser National League in 1988. Then he returned to the United States to pursue a career as a coach.

Sean Payton began his career as an offensive assistant at San Diego State. Additionally, he served as an assistant coach at Indiana State University, Miami University, and Illinois. Sean Payton was hired as the Quarterbacks Coach for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1997. He then served as the New York Giants’ Quarterbacks Coach before being promoted to Offensive Coordinator. And in 2003, Sean Payton joined Bill Parcells as the Dallas Cowboys’ assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach. In 2004, he became a highly sought-after coach, so the Cowboys increased his salary and promoted him to Assistant Head Coach/Passing Game Coordinator the following season.
