Michael Shawn Hickenbottom was born on July 22, 1965, in Chandler, Arizona. His astrological sign is Leo, and he is of American descent. Carol and Richard Hickenbottom raised him. There are three elder siblings to Michael.

Michaels was 19 years old when he began training with the Mexican professional wrestler Jose Lothario. Soon after, in 1984, he debuted with the National Wrestling Alliance in the Mid-South Wrestling territory. The performance of Michaels impressed many professional wrestlers, including Terry Taylor. In 1985, he participated in the World Class Championship Wrestlers, a territory of the National Wrestling Alliance, and later qualified for another category of the Alliance, Central States Wrestling. He relocated to Kansas City for this reason. He won his first Tag Team Championship with Marty Jannetty by defeating the Batten Twins. Later that same year, he returned to Texas and began wrestling for Texas All-Star Wrestling. He wrestled for the American Wrestling Association beginning in 1986. He rejoined forces with Jannetty to form The Midnight Rockers. A year after winning the A.W.A. World Tag Team Championship, the team was signed by World Wrestling Entertainment. Participating in a live engagement as a member of The Midnight Rockers, Michaels made his W.W.E. debut. Soon after, Michael’s team was renamed The Rockers. They went on to win multiple tag team titles before disbanding in 1991. Michaels earned the nickname The Boy Toy.

Beginning with the eighth edition of WrestleMania, he began participating in singles matches for pay-per-view. He defeated Tio Santana in his first match as a solo competitor. In 1992, despite a brief losing sequence, Michaels won the Intercontinental Championship from the British Bulldog. A match between him and Razor Ramon in 1994 was voted Match of the Year by wrestling aficionados. Michaels became the leader of the background group The Kliq in 1995. A year later, he defeated Bert Hart to win the W.W.E. Championship for the first time. He subsequently won it twice more. In 1997, he teamed up with three other wrestlers to form D-Generation X. A year later, Michaels suffered a back injury during a game, forcing him to retire to recuperate. After spending his retirement instructing wrestlers, he returned in 2002. During the next eight years, he won numerous tag team championships before retiring for good in 2010. Six years later, he was appointed trainer and began assisting the careers of aspiring wrestlers. Michaels made his film début in 2017 with “The Resurrection of Gavin Stone,” a comedy-drama.

From 1988 to 1994, the former wrestler was married to Theresa Wood. He eventually wed Rebecca Curci. The couple has two children.

Michaels’s father was in the military, so as a child he lived in a number of locations, primarily San Antonio, Texas.

In fact, he performed a grappling routine at his school’s talent show when he was only 12 years old!
