She did not, nevertheless, receive support or encouragement from mentors or educators. 1984 marked the wedding of Weaver to stage director Jim Simpson; the couple has a daughter. She serves as the honorary chairwoman of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and is a supporter of numerous causes. She brought international attention to the detrimental effects of deep-sea trawling on marine habitats in October 2006.
