Bayless was called “Skip” by his father, John Sr. They never called him John because the name stuck so well. Bayless has always been interested in sports. He went to Northwest Classen High School and graduated in 1970. He loved playing baseball and basketball. In his junior and senior years, Bayless wrote a sports piece for the school newspaper. He got the Grantland Rice Scholarship to go to Vanderbilt University, which he did. He studied English and History as his major. Bayless got his high school diploma with honors in 1974.

After high school, Bayless got a job at The Miami Herald, where he wrote sports stories for more than two years. His first job was at the Los Angeles Times in August 1976. In 1977, he got the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Newspaper Writing. He was hired by The Dallas Morning News as a lead sports writer when he was 26 years old. His first book, “God’s Coach: The Hymns, Hype, and Hypocrisy of Tom Landry’s Cowboys,” came out in 1989. It was the best thing the writer had ever written.

He quit his job in Dallas in 1998 and became the lead sports writer for the Chicago Tribune. Bayless had a radio job before this with the ESPN Radio show “The Fabulous Sports Babe.” He was hired full-time by ESPN in 2004 to lead a daily TV show with Woody Paige. This part of the show was changed to “First Take,” and he left the network in June 2016. Bayless and Sharpe started their show, “Skip and Shannon: Undisputed,” that same year. You can watch it on Fox Sports 1. The TV host agreed to work for Fox Sports for four years and $32 million in 2021.
