Snoh Aalegra was born to Persian parents from the south of Iran in Uppsala, Sweden. Her birth name was Shahrzad Fooladi, but at age 12 she adopted her mother’s surname, Nowrozi, after her parents’ divorce. Aalegra was then raised by her mother, who brought her with her when she moved to Enkoping, where Aalegra spent her formative years before relocating to Stockholm. Aalegra, then 13 years old, inked an artist development contract with Sony Music Sweden in 2001, but she left without releasing any music. Her musical career began on February 16, 2009, when she released her debut single, ‘Hit and Run,’ under the mononym Sheri. Produced by Swedish songwriter and producer Andreas Carlsson, the tune reached No. 12 on the Swedish Singles Charts. Her subsequent single, ‘U Got Me Good,’ was published on December 4, 2009, and reached number two on the charts. Her debut studio album, “First Sign,” was released on April 6, 2010. Aalegra resided briefly in London before relocating to Los Angeles in 2012. She contracted into ARTium Recordings in 2013, a label belonging to Ernest Dion Wilson, an American R&B and hip hop record producer widely known by the stage name No I.D.
Her debut under the name Snoh Aalegra occurred in July 2014 with her appearance on ‘Hustle Harder,’ a song from American rapper Common’s tenth studio album, “Nobody’s Smiling.” Her debut single under her new moniker, ‘Bad Things’, was released in October 2014, and her debut EP, “There Will Be Sunshine,” was released on November 17, 2014. In that year, the late Prince Rogers Nelson discovered Aalegra’s talent and mentored her until his passing in 2016. In February 2015, Aalegra announced that she had altered her legal name to Snoh Nowrozi. On February 11, 2015, she released a new single this year titled ‘Emotional.’ Through ARTium Recordings, she released another E.P., “Don’t Explain,” on April 8, 2016, in which she collaborated with John Mayer and Sia. In 2017, Aalegra embarked on her maiden North American tour. On October 20, 2017, she released her debut album as “Snoh Aalegra” titled “Feels,” a cinematic soul album with a nostalgic combination of soul and R&B. On September 12, 2018, Christian Rich and Vince Staples produced her next single, ‘Nothing Burns Like the Cold,’ which was subsequently featured in Apple’s iPhone XS announcement video and advertisements. In the autumn of 2018, she headlined her first tour in North America with support from Leven Kali and Mereba.
In August of 2019, Aalegra released her next album, “Ugh, Those Feelings Again.” It placed third on the Billboard R&B Album Sales chart and sixth on the Billboard R&B Albums chart. The album’s lead single, ‘I Want You Around,’ topped the Billboard Adult R&B Songs chart. Aalegra starred alongside actor Michael B. Jordan in the music video for her single ‘Whoa’ on December 13, 2019. In the autumn of 2019, she headlined a European and North American tour with Baby Rose and Giveon and topped the Bandsintown + Billboard Global Rising Artists Index.
On March 9, 2020, Aalegra signed a recording contract with Roc Nation/Universal Music Group in collaboration with her current distributor, ARTium Records. Her first single under both labels was titled “Dying 4 Your Love,” and her debut album with ARTium Records and Roc Nation, “Temporary Highs in the Violet Skies,” was published on July 9, 2021. Her “Ugh, These Temporary Highs Tour” kicked off in Manchester, United Kingdom, on February 13, 2022, followed by a March tour of the United States.
