Sridevi campaigned for her father during the 1989 assembly elections in the Sivakasi constituency, which he ultimately lost. Her father perished of a heart attack in 1990, while she was filming Lamhe. Her mother passed away in 1996 due to complications from a brain tumour operation she underwent in 1995 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York. The neurosurgeon operated on the incorrect side of her brain, destroying vision and recent memory cells. This was extensively reported in US media at the time, which led to a successful court case and prompted then-President Bill Clinton to propose a programme requiring hospitals to disclose medical malpractice and errors.

In 2011, Sridevi and her spouse Boney Kapoor attended Esha Deol’s wedding reception.

Sridevi was very protective of her privacy and rarely gave interviews or spoke about her personal life in them. She married entrepreneur Boney Kapoor in 1996. The couple had two daughters, both of whom are actresses: Janhvi (born in 1997) and Khushi (born in 2000).

Off-screen, Sridevi was an extremely introverted and reserved individual, despite being known for her portrayals of strong, vivacious, and ebullient women. Rajeev Masand, a correspondent for CNN-IBN, remarked, “I’ve never met anyone who was so painfully shy and quiet off-camera, but transformed into a force of nature when the cameras were turned on.” She was a nightmare for interviewers, but a movie buff’s fantasy. Firstpost comments on her reticence, stating, “Behind the glamorous heroine with twinkling, magical eyes and a stunning face, there was a shy woman who was often misunderstood for arrogant.” The fact is that she was timid. Since she began acting at age 4, she did not receive a formal education or have many opportunities to interact with children her own age. As a result, she developed an aversion to crowds and commotion.”

Death

Sridevi and her youngest daughter Khushi flew to Al Jazirah Al Hamra in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates, on 20 February 2018 to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah’s nuptials. After the nuptials, she decided to spend a few days in Dubai shopping for her eldest daughter Janhvi’s 21st birthday. Her spouse Boney Kapoor was absent from the wedding because he was required to attend a meeting in Lucknow on February 22. However, he had already planned a surprise visit to his wife, whom he spoke with on the morning of February 24 when she told him, “Papa (that’s how Sridevi addressed Boney), I’m missing you.” According to Boney, he took a 15:30 flight to Dubai and arrived at Sridevi’s room in the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel at 18:20 (Dubai time). She and Boney conversed for approximately 30 minutes. They resolved to have dinner afterwards. While Boney waited in the living room, Sridevi went to cleanse and get dressed for dinner. After 15–20 minutes, at approximately 19:00, he cried out to her because they were running late but received no response.

Sridevi was pronounced dead at 19:00 GMT on February 24, 2018, in the hotel room where her spouse discovered her. Sanjay Kapoor initially announced to the Indian media that the cause of death was cardiac arrest. However, the investigation into her death began early Sunday morning around 2:30 a.m., and the case was transferred to Dubai Public Prosecution by Dubai Police. The General Department of Forensic Evidence, Dubai revealed that the cause of death was “accidental drowning”. The toxicology report subsequently revealed that traces of alcohol and water were found in her body and lungs, respectively.
