Steve Perry has millions of followers thanks to his gorgeous tenor voice. He had a difficult beginning and nearly gave up on music, but he seized his opportunity and rose to prominence in the field. Perry was born under the sign of Aquarius on January 22, 1949, in Hanford, Kings County, California. Raymond Perry and Mary Quaresma, his parents, are Portuguese immigrants who came from the Azores Islands. His father owned a radio station and performed as a vocalist. When he was eight years old, his parents divorced, and he and his mother relocated to Lemoore, California.
He was inspired to become a vocalist by the song “Cupid” by Sam Cooke. Perry relocated to Sacramento, where he and Scott Mathews started a band called Ice. But the band never made any records and was never successful. After relocating to Thousand Oaks, California, in 1975, he teamed up with Tim Bogert to establish the unsuccessful band Pisces. After relocating to Banta, California, he started Alien Project, another band. Perry came dangerously close to giving up music after the untimely death of the band’s bassist.
His opportunity came when Robert Fleischman, the uncommitted lead singer of Journey, asked him to fill in. Perry gave a solo performance with the band one day when Fleischman was absent, and that was that. Later on, he took Fleischman’s place. He was able to alter the band’s sound using his voice, but several members opposed him. But eventually, they came to understand his new way, and he won them all over. Before releasing his debut solo album “Street Talk” in 1984, Perry contributed lead vocals to seven of Journey’s albums, which helped the band become more successful. Sales of “Street Talk” exceeded two million copies. To focus on his solo career, he quit Journey in 1987.
