His parents, recognising his interest in the arts, enrolled him in Little Theatre School when he was nine years old; he began his acting career in 1971. He attended Bishop England High School followed by the College of Charleston. In 1981, he received a scholarship to Juilliard’s Drama Division and interned at the Alabama Shakespeare college. In 1985, he graduated from college with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

In 1987, Gibson made his first television appearance in “Leg Work,” a legal drama. Then, he appeared in two long-running serial operas: “As the World Turns” and “Another World.” In 1992, he made his film debut in the Ron Howard film “Far and Away.” Gibson portrayed a homosexual waiter in two Denys Arcand films in 1993: “Love and Human Remains” and “Tales of the City.”

Gibson’s work on “Criminal Minds,” a programme he joined in 2005 and devoted a decade of his life to, brought him the most fame. He portrayed Aaron Hotchner and was a main cast member until he departed the show in 2016.
