Tim Conway changed his name to Tim to avoid confusion with British actor Tom Conway, for whom he was destined.
Tim Conway Biography: Thomas Daniel Conway, better known as Tim Conway, was an American television actor born on December 15, 1933, in Willoughby, Ohio. He passed away on May 14, 2019, at the age of 85, due to complications from an ongoing brain condition. Conway was diagnosed with dementia as a result of normal pressure hydrocephalus. He was a comedian best known for his roles on “The Carol Burnett Show” and as Ensign Charles Parker on “McHale’s Navy.”
Tim Conway also provided Barnacle Boy’s voice in the animated television series “SpongeBob SquarePants.” He was married to Charlene Fusco and had six children from his previous marriage with Mary Anne Dalton. He had amassed an illustrious fortune and had an estimated net worth of $15 million at the time of his death.
Tim Conway was in Willoughby, Ohio, a Cleveland suburb. He was born Thomas Daniel Conway but changed his name to Tim later in life to avoid confusion with British actor Tom Conway. He was the only child of European immigrants; his father, Dan Conway, was an Irish horseman, and his mother, Sophie Murgoiu, was from Romania. Conway’s family moved frequently as a child because his parents struggled to find work during the Great Depression.
Conway graduated from Chagrin Falls High School. He later attended Bowling Green State University and majored in television and radio while working as a disc jockey. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity while in college. In 1956, he enlisted in the United States Army after graduating. Following his discharge from the military in 1958, he returned to Cleveland and began working for several television stations, where he wrote several comedy skits that drew a lot of attention. He landed his breakthrough role on “The Steve Allen Show” a year later, then appeared in “McHale’s Navy.”
Throughout the 1960s, he appeared in several other short-lived television series. Conway’s career took off in 1970, when he co-starred with Joe Flynn in “The Tim Conway Show.” After 13 episodes, the show was canceled, but Conway was offered the opportunity to host his comedy variety show, “The Tim Conway Comedy Hour,” which lasted three months. Conway became a regular on “The Carol Burnett Show” in 1975, after frequently appearing in the previous eight seasons. His work on the show was well received, earning him four Emmy Awards — one for writing and three for acting — and introducing him to a global audience.
During his lifetime, Conway married twice. His first wife, Mary Anne Dalton, was with him from 1961 to 1978. Following his divorce from his first wife, he married Charlene Fusco in 1984. His death in 2019 from complications from Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus separated him from Charlene.
