Tony Benefit Birthday

Bennett is a legend of jazz and popular music who served in the military during World War II and then had a career that spanned more than half a century. He was born in Astoria, Queens, New York City, and attended the High School of Industrial Arts in New York City before dropping out to support his family by working as a performing waiter. After serving in the Army infantry during World War II, he utilised the G.I. Bill to study vocals at the American Theatre Wing.

In 1949, Pearl Bailey discovered Bennett and asked him to open for her in Greenwich Village. In 1950, he joined Columbia Records and began collaborating with record producer Mitch Miller. In the late 1950s, Bennett became interested in producing jazz recordings. On his 1958 album “Basie Swings, Bennett Sings,” which he co-wrote with Count Basie, the songs ‘Jeepers Creepers’ and ‘Chicago’ were included. In 1962, Bennett made a revival by releasing several solo albums. The public’s attention was captivated by ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco,’ which earned Bennett his first “Grammy Awards” and established it as his signature song. Bennett left Columbia Records at the beginning of the 1970s due to a disagreement and established his label, Improv, which was a complete failure.

The singer’s absence from the studio coincided with a period of personal turmoil. After moving to Los Angeles, he began abusing cocaine and marijuana, both of which were popular at celebrity parties. Bennett reconstructed his personal and professional affairs with the assistance of his eldest son Danny, who became his manager. The singer re-signed with Columbia Records, and his first studio album in nearly a decade, “The Art of Excellence,” was released in 1986. Bennett released a series of acclaimed tribute albums in the 1990s. In November 2006, he organised a Gala in his honour at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. A multitude of luminaries performed live for him. Bennett entertained his guests by singing his famous songs, ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco’ and ‘What A Good Life.’

In the early 1950s, Bennett and his first wife, Patricia Beech, met. The couple tied the knot in 1952. Beech appeared to have issues with Bennett’s alleged indiscretions, and despite having two children, D’Andrea ‘Danny’ Bennett and Daegal ‘Dae’ Bennett, the couple separated in 1971. Bennett had two more daughters with his second wife, Sandra Grant, whom he wed in 1971: Joanna Bennett and Antonia Bennett. The couple divorced in 2007 due to incompatibility. In 2007, he married his current wife, Susan Crow. However, they have no children together.
