Udupi Ramachandra Rao Biography: Udupi Ramachandra Rao was a renowned Space Scientist and physicist who served as Chairman of the ‘Indian Space Research Organisation’. He has also served as the Chairman of the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad and the Chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science Technology in Trivandrum. In addition to this, he has received numerous prestigious awards.

He began his career as a Cosmic Ray Scientist at MIT, where he labored under the supervision of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. Using Mariner 2, he then demonstrated the continuity of solar wind and its effect on geomagnetism. His investigations led to a comprehension of solar cosmic rays and the electromagnetic condition of interplanetary space. Under his direction, the ‘Aryabhatta’ satellite was designed, constructed, and launched. Over 18 satellites, including “Bhaskara, APPLE, Rohini, INSAT-1, etc.”, have since been launched.

In addition, he has published more than 300 scientific journals and articles on Cosmic Rays. In addition to serving as co-chairman of the National centre for Antarctica and Ocean Research in Goa, he was the first chairman of Prasar Bharati. He has also been honored with the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Group Achievement award from NASA, Yuri Gagarin Medal from the USSR, among others.

He has also received awards from numerous universities, including Kannada University, the Indian Institute of Technology, and others. He also held fellowships at the Indian Academy of Sciences, the National Science Academy, and the Aeronautical Society, among others.

His last breath was taken on July 24, 2017.

Udupi Ramachandra Rao Childhood and Education

Udupi Ramachandra Rao was born in Adamaru, Udupi district, Karnataka, India on March 10, 1932. His lineage is comprised of Madhwa Brahmin Hindus. His father’s name is Lakshminarayana Acharya, and his mother’s name was Krishnanevi Amma. Rao married Yashoda Rao, and the couple had a son named Madan Rao.

Ramachandra received his primary education at Adamaru and his secondary education at Christian High School, Udupi. In 1954, he earned an M.Sc from Banaras Hindu University after earning a Bachelor of Science from the Government Arts and Science College in Anantpur. 1960 saw the completion of his Ph.D. at the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad, India, under the supervision of Vikram Sarabhai.

The investigation was conducted while he was an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Dallas, where he worked. Rao concluded the investigations on multiple Pioneer and Explorer spacecrafts. In 1966, he returned to India and began teaching at the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad.

On 24 July 2017 in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, at the age of 85, Rao, a prominent figure in science and technology, passed away.

Rao is the recipient of numerous national honors, including the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award (1975), the Hari Om Vikram Sarabhai Award, the Shanti Swarup Bharnagar Award (1975), the Padma Bhushan (1976), the National Design Award (1980), the Visvik Research Award (1980), the Om Prakash Bhasin Award (1993), the P.C. Chandra Puraskar Award (1994), the Electronics Man of the Year Award

The former president of India and distinguished scientist “Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam” had a large deal of affection for Udupi Ramachandra Rao. He presented U.R. Rao with the “Lifetime Achievement Award” for his outstanding contributions.
