Early Years

She was elected as an MLA in Siddaramaiah’s government as minister for women and child development, empowerment of the differently abled and senior citizens, and Kannada language and culture. Umashree was born on May 10, 1957 in Nonavinakere, Karnataka, to the Devanga family. In 1980, she appeared in T S Nagabharana’s Kannada film BANGARADA JINKE. In 1984, Umashree received an award for her performance in the supporting character of Anubhava with Kashinath, which she received during her initial journey. The actress and politician received the National Film Award for Best Actress for the Kannada film Gulabi. In addition, the woman performs in rural areas to bring attention to the plight of the destitute. She is also a member of the Bangalore-based Rangasampada amateur theatre group. In addition, Umashree is the proud mother of two children, Gayathri and Vijayakumar, whom she reared by herself.

Career

In the late 1980s, she began her film career with a minor role in the film Anubhava, opposite Kashinath. Even though she had only a supporting role in the film, which had both comedic and dark undertones, her acting was praised by all. She even won an award for her performance. Later, however, she was branded for the same type of indecently humorous comedy roles with double-meaning dialogue. Initially, she established the best pairing with N. S. Rao, and with his unique style of dialogue delivery, they delighted Kannada movie audiences in a number of films. Later, after the actor’s passing, she was partnered with Mukhyamantri Chandru, Doddanna, and Karibasavaiah, with whom she formed an excellent pairing and shared a distinct comic timing. Her performance as the feeble washerwoman Muniyamma in the film Kotigalu Sir Kotigalu was greatly appreciated by both children and adults.

The role she played in the film Puttananja altered Umashree’s entire life. Even though she had been praised for her performances in films such as Tayyavva, Amrutha Ghalige, Sangya Balya, etc., her portrayal of an 80-year-old grandmother in the film brought her immense talent to the forefront. Later, numerous directors, such as S. V. Rajendra Singh Babu, Yograj Bhat, etc., provided her with greater roles that afforded her ample opportunity to display her talent. Her portrayal of an elderly courtesan attempting to save her daughter from the flesh-trade in the 2005 film Mani earned her the Karnataka State award for Best Supporting Actress.

She is presently starring in a number of films that offer her superior roles. She was an MLC (Member of Legislative Council) in the Karnataka State Government and is presently the President of the Other Backward Class Department for the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.

Personal Life

Umashree’s spouse left her at a very young age and married another woman. She was solely responsible for raising her two children. That is why she became an actress – to adequately support her family. Her eldest daughter Gayathri is a doctor with a Master of Dental Surgery degree, while her son Vijayakumar is an advocate with a Master of Laws degree from Australia. She is also involved in numerous social activities for the upliftment of rural and oppressed women and has performed numerous stage plays highlighting the issues they encounter in numerous villages in the interior of Karnataka. As a seated MLC, she also brought these concerns to the attention of the Karnataka government.
