Vajramuni was born Sadananda Sagar on 11 May 1944 in the Kanakanapalya, a locality in the Jayanagar neighbourhood of Bangalore, into a Vokkaliga family. His family members were devotees of the Hindu deity Vajramuneshwara, after whom he was named. They belonged to the Hallikar community of cattle farmers. The then-Maharaja of Mysore gave Vajramuni’s progenitors land grants and appointed them guardians of the village of Anjanapura (in the present-day Bangalore Urban district), and the family has lived there ever since. Vajramuni was the oldest of his seven siblings. His father, R. Vajrappa, served as a corporator in Bangalore for four terms between 1958 and 1968. He passed away in 1986. His uncle was the politician and educator Dayananda Sagar (1922–1982), according to footnote 8.
Vajramuni was a high school reject with a cinematography degree. He was a product of amateur Kannada theatre. His performance as Ravana in Kanagal Prabhakar Shastri’s play Prachanda Ravana impressed Puttanna Kanagal, who offered Vajramuni a role in the film Saavira Mettilu. However, the film was cancelled.
Vajramuni’s first film as an actor was eventually Mallammana Pavada, which was cast by Kanagal. Producers insisted that Udaya Kumar would be a superior match for the Tamil version’s Shivaji Ganeshan, but Puttanna insisted that it must be Vajramuni. Vajramuni acted in several films such as Mayura, Sampathige Saval, Daari Tappida Maga, Premada Kanike, Giri Kanye, Shankar Guru and Aakasmika with Rajkumar.
Bettale Seve was the Best Supporting Actor in 1982–1983.

On January 5, 2006, at 5:30 a.m. (IST), he passed away at a private hospital in Bangalore due to deteriorating health caused by multiple maladies, including diabetes mellitus. His grandson has appeared in the television series Uge Uge Maadeshwara as a minor actor.
