Victoria Leigh Soto Biography: By sacrificing her life to save her pupils, Victoria Leigh Soto, a hero, demonstrated that the lives of the youth were more valuable than her own. In the United States, she was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Carlos and Donna Fagan-Soto. Her father, who was a crane operative for the Connecticut Department of Transportation, is of Puerto Rican descent. In contrast, her mother is of Irish-American descent and was a Bridgeport Hospital nurse. Soto, Jillian and Carlee, her two sisters, and Carlos Matthew, her brother, were all reared by their parents. She earned bachelor’s degrees in education and history from Stratford High School and Eastern Connecticut State University, respectively, in 2004. She subsequently matriculated at Southern Connecticut State University for graduate studies.

On December 14, 2012, Soto passed away at the age of 27. Adam Lanza began shooting staff and pupils in the Sandy Hook Elementary School classroom where she was accompanied by her first-grade students. Soto’s class was evacuated subsequent to Lanza’s fatalities of fifteen students and two instructors in the initial class. Soto concealed her pupils in closets and cabinets and informed Lanza that they were in fact at the school gymnasium when she noticed Lanza had arrived. Although Soto and sixteen of her pupils remained unharmed, the gunman struck Soto as she leapt to the front to shield students who were attempting to flee.

In remembrance of Soto, memorials in the form of scholarships, roads, schools, and buildings retain her name. She symbolizes both affection and selflessness. Jessica Hill, an affiliated press photographer, captured the photograph of Soto’s sister on her mobile phone while awaiting news about her. The image has since gained iconic status and has come to represent the catastrophe.
