Early Years

The principal was born in Fukuoka, Japan on January 3, 1950. She is the oldest child of Victor Rocco Principal, who was stationed in Fukuoka at the time, and Ree Veal. Additionally, she has a sister named Kim. Principal’s childhood was marked by frequent relocation due to her father’s career; she lived in London, Puerto Rico, Florida, and Massachusetts, among other locations. She attended seventeen distinct institutions and the Royal Ballet School while her family resided in England.

She graduated from South Dade Senior High School in Miami in 1968 and subsequently enrolled at Miami-Dade Community College to pursue medicine. However, only a few months into her first academic year, she was injured in a car accident caused by a drunk driver while travelling from the library to her home. Because she was hospitalised for several months and fell behind in school, she confronted the possibility of repeating the entire first-year curriculum. Instead, she made a drastic decision to relocate to New York City and pursue an acting career. She moved to London shortly thereafter to study under Professor Jean Scott at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Career

In 1970, following her experience in London, Principal relocated to Los Angeles. Her first film role was in John Huston’s “The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean.” She was nominated for a Golden Globe in the category for Most Promising Newcomer for her performance. Other early works by this author include “The Naked Ape,” “Earthquake,” and “The Night They Took Miss Beautiful.” She chose to pursue a career in law and decided to accept only small roles to support herself through school.

However, her intentions changed when a friend delivered a script for “Dallas” to the Principal. She called the casting agent to schedule an audition after being so enamoured with the script that she earned the role of Pamela Barnes Ewing. “Dallas” was on the air from 1978 to 1991, making it one of the longest-running prime-time television soap operas. It was also an extensively viewed programme, both by audiences and critics. The principal received praise for her performance but departed the series in 1987, citing dissatisfaction with the departure of so many of the original show’s writers. During her time on the programme, she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series.

After “Dallas,” Principal continued to act in television and film productions. She secured roles in the films “Blind Witness,” “Home Improvement,” “Michael Kael vs. the World News Company,” and “Titans.” She accompanied many original “Dallas” cast members in “Dallas Reunion: The Return to Southfork,” a television special honouring the original series.
