Presently, his paintings are among the most renowned in the world, and they are on display in numerous prestigious institutions, including one named after him in his native Netherlands. Millions continue to admire him and his work, astounded not only by his talent but also by his exquisite perspective on the world. Today, we honour one of the greatest artists in history.

Vincent van Birthday

Vincent van Gogh, an Aries from the Netherlands, was born in Zundert on March 30, 1853. Van Gogh was the eldest of six children born to Theodorus van Gogh and Anna Cornelia Carbentus, who named him after relatives and progenitors of his father. His mother encouraged him to draw as a child, nudging him into his first steps in the realm of art.

At the age of 16, his relative secured him a job as an art dealer with Goupil, where he trained and worked until 1873, when he transferred to the company’s London branch. However, after his transfer to Paris, he began having difficulties at work and was dismissed. He became extremely religious and aspired to become a pastor, but his efforts were ineffectual.

Theo van Gogh, Van Gogh’s sibling, advised the young painter to pursue art more seriously and to draw the people and scenes that interested him around 1880. So Van Gogh enrolled at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. The following year, his successful artist second cousin Anton Mauve took him in as a pupil, taught him watercolour and oil painting, and lent him money for a studio. Afterwards, he began oil painting and was delighted with the results. Between 1883 and 1885, Van Gogh produced approximately 200 oil paintings, in addition to watercolours and drawings. His sibling Theo attempted to sell his dark-colored paintings, but was unsuccessful due to their hue. However, in August 1885, Van Gogh held the first public exhibition of his works. The following year, he joined his brother in Paris, where he used a more vibrant colour palette and met numerous renowned artists. Upon his departure from the French capital two years later, he had completed more than 200 canvases.

In 1888, he moved to Arles, where the landscape and light inspired him to create three of his most famous works: “Van Gogh’s Chair,” “Bedroom in Arles,” and “Sunflowers.” Van Gogh moved into the Yellow House, which he planned to depict in his project “Décoration for the Yellow House,” alongside the French artist Paul Gauguin, whom he had met in Paris. However, their relationship deteriorated, and Van Gogh cut off his left ear around this time. Despite being hospitalised for acute mania, he continued to paint during this period. In 1889, he departed Arles for the Saint-Paul Asylum in Saint-Rémy, where he painted the clinic’s interior and garden.

During this time, he painted “The Starry Night,” which depicts the view from his room’s window before dawn and is considered his masterpiece. Because he had limited access to the outside world while in an asylum, he also reworked some of his earlier paintings and painted his own renditions of the works of other artists.

Van Gogh participated in two exhibitions in 1890, where he received praise for his work, including from the renowned painter Claude Monet. In May of the same year, he relocated to Auvers-sur-Oise, a suburb of Paris, and was captivated by the region’s expansive wheat fields. In one of these wheat fields, Van Gogh tragically either shot himself or was shot. The shot did not instantaneously kill him. Without a surgeon to remove the bullet, he passed away thirty hours later, with his sibling Theo by his side.

Since more than a century ago, Vincent van Gogh’s work has provided us with a new perspective on the world. His use of colour and expressive brushwork, as well as his unique depiction of the world, define his unmatched style and technique, which have established him as one of the finest artists who ever lived. He continues to influence millions of artists worldwide and is studied by eminent academics.
