Mitchell was born in Bamberg, Germany, on September 24, 2000. He will be 22 years old in 2023. The athlete was born in Germany, but he is a citizen of the United States.

He competed on the athletic teams of Woodstock Academy in Woodstock, Connecticut, and Elizabeth Forward High School in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. As a senior, he lead his team to a 39-2 record and the National Prep Championship quarterfinals by averaging 16.6 points, 13.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.6 blocks per game.

The basketball player was named the Most Valuable Player of the Hoophall Classic and the Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year. Mitchell competed for Expressions Elite in AAU contests. Mitchell, a four-star recruit overall, chose UMass to play college basketball over offers from Georgia Tech, Indiana, Providence, Syracuse, and Virginia Tech.

On February 4, 2020, during a 73-67 loss to Rhode Island, the basketeer scored 30 points. On February 22, he had 19 rebounds and 15 points as his team defeated Fordham 57-49. In his final game of the year, he scored a season-high 34 points and grabbed 12 rebounds on March 7.

As a rookie, Tre lead his team in scoring and rebounds with averages of 17.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. He fell eight points short of Jim McCoy’s freshman scoring record at the institution while setting the record for field goals by a freshman.

The athlete was the first UMass freshman since Marcus Camby in 1994 to earn all-conference honours. He was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week six times, including the final five weeks of the regular season.

The West Virginia Mountaineers athlete was named to the First Team All-Atlantic 10 after averaging 18.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per contest as a sophomore. As a junior, he averaged 8.7 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. After the season, he registered for the transfer portal and ultimately chose West Virginia.
