Voltaire Biography: Born on November 21, 1694, Francois-Marie Arouet, better known by his pen name Voltaire, was a French Enlightenment philosopher, historian, and writer. A prolific writer and philosopher, he made a significant contribution to the Age of Enlightenment. He was born in Paris, France to the legal practitioner Francois Aroue and the maitre Marie Marguerite Daumard. He was one of five siblings; he was the youngest. Based on Voltaire’s date of birth, astrological prognostications indicate that his zodiac sign is Scorpio.

Voltaire harbored a strong desire to pursue a career in writing. However, his father had a different plan for him; he desired for him to pursue a career in law. It is common knowledge that the revolutionary theorist was a precursor to the French Revolution. By advocating for freedom of religion and freedom of expression, he was an indispensable forerunner. Voltaire was the pseudonym Voltaire, which Arouet adopted in 1718 subsequent to his abolition at the Bastille. October 1718 marked the premiere of Voltaire’s inaugural theatrical production, “Oedipus,” in which he employed his pen name for the first time. Voltaire was once more unjustly imprisoned in the Bastille in 1726 for threatening Chevalier de Rohan in a duel. Because he dreaded protracted incarceration, he petitioned for exile in England. Voltaire released “Candide, ou l’Optimisme” in 1759; it remains his most renowned work to this day. Voltaire commenced his advocacy for religious freedom subsequent to Jean Calas’s persecution.

Voltaire was the progenitor of no dynasty. His affairs amounted to a series. He had an affair with the married Émilie du Chatelet. The duration of the affair was sixteen years. Subsequently, it came to light that he pursued an affair with Marie-Louise Mignot, his own niece, with whom he cohabitated during their marriage. Voltaire passed away childless and technically a bachelor; he never fathered any children. Voltaire passed away at the age of 83 on May 30, 1778. Voltaire was acknowledged by the National Assembly of France in 1791 as an early progenitor of the French Revolution.
