Vyjayanthimala Biography: Vyjayanthimala (born August 13, 1936) was an Indian actress, performer, and politician. She has received numerous accolades, including two BFJA Awards and five Filmfare Awards, and is regarded as one of Indian cinema’s outstanding actresses and dancers. She made her screen début at the age of thirteen in the 1949 Tamil film Vaazhkai, and subsequently appeared in the 1950 Telugu film Jeevitham. Her first film in Hindi was the social education film Bahar (1951), in which she starred, and her breakthrough came with the romantic film Nagin (1954).

Vyjayanthimala Early Years

She was born in Chennai,Triplicane near Parthasarathy Temple to Mandyam Dhati Raman and Vasundhara Devi, who were Tamil Iyengar Brahmin. Her primary carer was her grandmother, Yadugiri Devi. Her native language is Tamil. In the 1940s, her mother was a prominent actress in Tamil cinema, and her film Mangama Sabatham was the first Tamil film to be deemed a “colossal” box office success.

At the age of five, Vyjayanthimala was selected to perform a classical Indian performance for Pope Pius XII at the Vatican in 1940, while her mother was in attendance. Vyjayanthi attended Sacred Heart High School, Presentation Convent, Church Park, Chennai, India. Guru Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai taught her Bharata Natyam, and Manakkal Sivaraja Iyer instructed her in Carnatic music. She received her arangetram at age 13 and subsequently began performing in Tamil Nadu. Her uncle on her mother’s side is Y. G. Parthasarathy. Mandyam Dhati Gopalacharya, her grandfather, established a nursing facility on Narayan Shastri Road in Mysore in 1938.

Career

Vyjayanthimala, a young actress, was selected in M. V. Raman’s Tamil film Vazhkai for AVM Productions. She portrayed a college student named Mohana Shivashankaralingam alongside veteran actors. The film was a huge success, and Vyjayanthimala dubbed her own voice with her father’s assistance. In the 1950 movie Vijayakumari, she danced to the melody “laalu…laalu…laalu.”

In 1951, AVM Productions remade Vazhkai as Bahar in Hindi due to the film’s triumph in South India. Vyjayanthimala studied Hindi at the Hindi Prachar Sabha and provided her vocal for the film’s dubbing. The film was a box office success and the sixth highest-grossing film of 1951.

Penn was a multilingual film starring Vyjayanthimala in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi as Ladki, opposite Kishore Kumar and Bharat Bhushan. It was the second highest-grossing movie of 1953. In 1954, she starred in Nagin, the highest-grossing film of the year, and Kishore Kumar’s Miss Mala. Asha Nirasha was Vyjayanthimala’s début in Kannada cinema, but it was never released.

Vyjayanthimala appeared in five Hindi films in 1955, including Yasmin, Pehli Jhalak, Sitara, and Jashan. However, none of her films were commercially successful. In 1955, she portrayed Chandramukhi in Bimal Roy’s critically acclaimed adaptation of Sharat Chandra Chatterji’s novel Devdas. Despite initial opposition from the industry, Vyjayanthimala accepted the role due to the financial crisis. She refused to receive her Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. The film received positive reviews but did not perform well at the box office.

In 1956, Vyjayanthimala starred in a number of successful films, including Taj, Patrani, and Anjaan: Somewhere in Delhi. She also acted in the remake of the Tamil film Kanavaney Kankanda Deivam, the swashbuckler film Devta. Her performance as Naag Rani and her choreography were vital to the film’s success. She was originally cast in Sohrab Modi’s film Rajhath, but Madhubala replaced her due to scheduling conflicts.

Vyjayanthimala’s political career began in 1984 when she ran against Era Sezhiyan, the leader of the Janata Party and an experienced parliamentarian, for the South Chennai constituency as the nominee of the Indian National Congress. During the election campaign, Sezhiyan made provocative statements such as, “Send me to the Lok Sabha. Send her to R.R. Sabha (an organisation that promotes fine arts)” to defeat Vyjayanthimala; paradoxically, she won the election by a margin of approximately 48,000 votes with a percentage of 51.92 per cent. By the end of January 1985, she made her debut in the Lok Sabha, the directly elected lower chamber of the Indian Parliament, alongside Amitabh Bachchan.

In the 1989 Tamil Nadu general election, Vyjayanthimala faced Aladi Aruna of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, her opponent this time. Again, she defeated her opponent by nearly 12584 ballots. Later in 1993, she was nominated for a six-year term in the Rajya Sabha, the upper branch of the Indian Parliament. In 1999, she resigned from the Indian National Congress party’s primary membership. In her resignation letter to the party’s president, Sonia Gandhi, she stated, “Painfully watching the party drift from its stated principles since the death of Rajiv Gandhi, the party has lost touch with its grassroots, and one can see day after day that sincere party workers are being steadily ignored.” She continues, “it is becoming increasingly difficult to justify ourselves to the public, and my conscience no longer permits me to remain in the party.” On September 6, 1999, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Vyjayanthimala Personal Life

In 1968, Vyjayanthimala wed Chamanlal Bali, a married Punjabi Hindu Arya Samaji from Delhi who resided in Anna Salai, Chennai. She gave up her acting career and migrated to Chennai following her marriage. However, between 1968 and 1970, she filmed films such as Pyar Hi Pyar, Prince, and Ganwaar for which she had signed contracts before her marriage. Their son’s name is Suchindra Bali. 2007 saw the publication of her autobiography, Bonding, co-written by Jyoti Sabarwal.
