Gretzky began playing hockey with the teens in his community by the time he turned six. He played with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League in 1977, where he was selected third in the midget draft. His outstanding performance at the World Junior Championship in 1978 catapulted him toward the major level.

Career

Gretzky participated in his first-ever official NHL season in 1979, despite age restrictions. He disproved his doubters with an outstanding performance, scoring an incredible 137 points to win the league’s Most Valuable Player title. He was among the top performers in terms of goals and points scored by 1986. With 52 goals and 163 assists at the end of the season, he was ranked among the best ice hockey players in the world. His hockey prowess made him a national hero, and the Canadian government showed no qualms about bestowing upon him accolade after accolade.

Achievements

The highest civilian award in Canada, the Officer of the Order of Canada, was given to Gretzky in recognition of his achievements.
