Wendy began learning English, French, and Spanish at Richmond Hill High School, the high school she attended. Wendy returned to South Korea after graduation to pursue a career in the music industry. She was selected from 5,000 videos in a 2010 online audition for the “Koreaboo: Cube Entertainment Global Auditions 2011” in Vancouver, British Columbia, where she advanced to the final round. In 2019, Wendy suffered severe injuries and was hospitalised after a rehearsal accident in which she fell from the platform and fractured her pelvis and wrist.

Wendy is the lead vocalist for Red Velvet, a Korean pop girl group. The name has been unpacked and discussed, elucidating its uniqueness and rationale.
