Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, a 26-year-old woman whose father was an affluent farmer, in Canterbury Province, Worcester, on November 27, 1582, when he was 18 years old. Anne was three months expectant at the time of their marriage, and their first daughter, Susanna, was born on May 26, 1583. The couple gave birth to twins, Hamnet and Judith, on February 2, 1585. Hamnet passed away at age 11 from unidentified causes and was interred on August 11, 1596. The seven years following the births of Hamnet and Judith were referred to as Shakespeare’s “lost years” because no evidence of his existence exists. Shakespeare allegedly fled Stratford to prevent being prosecuted as a poacher, according to a popular theory prevalent during this period. Shakespeare’s reputation as a country lad waned during this time, and he reemerged as a playwright and businessman, implying that he learned his craft in London.
Contemporary allusions and performance records indicate that some of Shakespeare’s plays were on the London stage as early as 1592, despite the absence of a precise date for his writing debut. In the early 1590s, Shakespeare resided somewhere in Bishopsgate, London, according to court documents. At the period, his works included “Two Gentlemen of Verona,” “Love’s Labour’s Lost,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “Richard II,” and “The Merchant of Venice.” He penned his two lengthy poems, ‘Venus and Adonis’ and ‘The Rape of Lucrece,’ and also began writing sonnets, suggesting an interest in poetry.
Shakespeare spent the majority of his career in London with this group of performers as an actor, producer, theatre owner, and, of course, a very popular playwright. Following the demise of Queen Elizabeth in 1603, King James I granted the organisation a royal patent and changed its name to the King’s Men. Between 1599 and 1604, he composed such plays as “Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2,” “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” and “Much Ado About Nothing.” In Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare received correspondence and visits from numerous theatrical, artistic, and literary acquaintances.
