Wyclef Jean Biography: Wyclef Jean, an American-Haitian rapper and songwriter born on October 17, 1969, is best known for his chart-topping album “The Score.” He began his musical career by singing in church ensembles; his father was a minister. As a youth, he was forbidden to listen to rap music, and if he did, he was severely flogged for “playing the devil’s music.” Despite his father’s objections, Jean and two of his singer-songwriter friends established a band. Even though their debut album was well-received, it was their second album that propelled them to stardom. However, the trio shortly disbanded and Jean released his first solo album, which caused a sensation in the music industry. Today, we honour this extraordinary artist and his achievements.

Wyclef Jean Birthday

Wyclef Jean was born in 1969 in the small Haitian village of Croix-des-Bouquets to the Nazarene pastor Gesner Jean. His cousins reared him and his three siblings after his parents left for America. Jean immigrated to the United States at the age of nine. He attended Newark’s Vailsburg High School before enrolling at Massachusetts’ Eastern Nazarene College. He briefly attended Five Towns College in Dix Hill before withdrawing to pursue a career in music.

Together with singer-songwriters Lauryn Hill and Prakazrel “Pras” Michel, he founded the Refugee Camp, which later became the Fugees. In 1993, they signed with Ruffhouse Records, and their debut album, “Blunted on Reality,” was a moderate success. 1996 marked the publication of the band’s second and most popular album, “The Score.” Then, he announced the release of his debut solo album, “The Carnival,” in 1997, which featured Hill and Pras and two successful singles. All of his solo albums, “The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book,” “Masquerade,” “Greatest Hits,” and “The Preacher’s Son,” were released in the early 2000s. During this time period, he was featured on popular albums by Whitney Houston, Shakira, and Carlos Santana, among others. On November 10, 2009, he released “From the Hut to the Projects, to the Mansion,” a concept album that featured Lil’Kim and Timbaland. On August 20, 2010, he declared his candidature for the Haitian presidency, but the Haitian Provisional Electoral Council rejected it because he did not satisfy key residency requirements.

He married Marie Claudinette in 1994, and the couple adopted Angelina Claudette Jean in March 2005. They renewed their vows in 2009 and currently reside in New York City.
