Yogendra Singh Yadav Biography: This warrior, one of the many champions of the Kargil conflict, displayed indomitable bravery by raising the tricolour. Yogendra Singh Yadav remained steadfast despite being wounded 15 times during the 1999 Kargil conflict. He had destroyed numerous enemy shelters.
Subedar Major Yadav was born to a Yadav family in Aurangabad Ahir, Bulandshahr District, Uttar Pradesh on 10 May 1980. His father Karan Singh Yadav served in the Kumaon Regiment during the Indo-Pakistan conflicts of 1965 and 1971. Yadav entered the Indian Army at the age of 16 years and five months.
Kargil War
Yadav enlisted with the 18 Grenadiers and became a member of the Ghatak Force commando platoon, which was entrusted with seizing three strategic bunkers on Tiger Hill on July 4, 1999. The shelters were situated atop a 1,000-foot (300-meter) vertical, snow-covered cliff face. Yadav volunteered to lead the assault, scaled the cliff face, and installed cables to facilitate future assaults against the feature. The platoon commander and two others were killed by a machine gun and rocket fire from an enemy emplacement at the halfway point of the ascent.
Yadav reached the summit despite being struck by multiple bullets in the groyne and shoulder. He ascended the remaining 60 feet (18 metres) to reach the summit. Despite being gravely wounded, he crawled to the first bunker and threw a grenade, murdering four Pakistani soldiers and halting enemy fire. This allowed the remainder of the platoon to scale the precipice face along with two of his fellow soldiers and engage in hand-to-hand combat with four Pakistani soldiers, resulting in their deaths. Subsequently, the platoon was successful in capturing Tiger Hill. Despite being struck by 12 gunshots, Yadav played a crucial role in its capture.
Yadav was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, but it was soon discovered that he was recovering in a hospital and that his namesake had been killed in the mission.
In 2021, Yadav will be awarded the honorary rank of captain by Lieutenant General Rajeev Sirohi. On Independence Day of 2021, Yadav was awarded the honorary rank of captain by the President of India. The rank insignias were presented by Lieutenant General Rajeev Sirohi, Military Secretary and Colonel of the Grenadiers. On 31 December 2021, he retired from the army with the rank of Honorary Captain and a traditional ceremony.
Subedar Major and Honorary Captain Yogendra Singh Yadav, PVC after retirement, has joined the advisory board of udChalo, a consumer technology enterprise that caters to military personnel.
Karan Singh Yadav, the father of Yogendra Singh Yadav, is a retired Kumaon Regiment soldier who fought in the 1965 and 1971 battles against Pakistan. The name of his mother is Santaro Devi. Devendra Singh Yadav, Rambal Singh Yadav, and Jitendra Singh Yadav are Yogendra’s three siblings. Yogendra’s older brother, Jitendra Singh Yadav, is an engineer in the Indian Army. Jitendra joined the armed services a few years before Yogendra.
