On April 16, 1853, Indian Railways launched the first passenger train from Bori Bunder to Thane, a distance of 34 kilometres.

Rail History

Indian Rail Transport dates back to the middle of the 19th century when the country’s first train arrived in 1853. The train existed by the Great Indian Peninsular Railway (GIPR) and ran approximately 34 kilometres between Mumbai and Thane.

Following the inaugural train’s success, other railway organisations emerged in India, including the Scindia State Railway, the Southern Mahratta Railway, and the East India Railway Company. These companies built and operated railways in different parts of the country.

During the British Raj, railways in India were primarily built for the purpose of transporting goods such as cotton, jute, tea, and coal. However, the railways also played a significant role in the movement of people and goods, particularly during the two World Wars.

After India gained independence in 1947, the railways were nationalized and became the responsibility of the government. Over the years, the Indian Railways has grown to become one of the largest rail networks in the world, covering a distance of around 68,000 kilometres and carrying over 23 million passengers and 3 million tons of freight every day.

The Indian Railways has also undergone significant modernization in recent years, with the introduction of high-speed trains, new technologies, and improved infrastructure. Today, the railways continue to be a crucial mode of transportation in India, connecting people across the country and contributing significantly to the nation’s economy.

  • More than 160 years ago, Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy and Jagnath Shunkerseth laid the foundation for the railroads.
  • The Indian Rail network is the third largest rail network in the globe, with a total length of 1,27,760 kilometres.
  • The Vande Bharat Express, the fastest railway in India, travels at a speed of 180 kilometres per hour, while the Mettupalayam – Ooty Nilgiri passenger train travels at only 10 kilometres per hour.
  • The Vivek Express is the longest route train in India, with a duration of 80 hours and 15 minutes. It is 4233 kilometres long and passes through eight states.
  • The New Delhi Railway Station is the largest Route Relay Interlocking System in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
  • Chenab Bridge is a concrete arch bridge that connects Bakkal and Kauri in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. it is the highest rail bridge in India. The bridge will be 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower upon completion.
  • Every railway station has a unique name, with “Ib” in Odisha having the shortest name with only two syllables and “Sri Venkatanarasimharajuvariipeta” having the longest.
