Maharashtra Foundation Day: Date, History, Significance of Maharashtra Din

According to the Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960, passed by the Indian Parliament on 25 April 1960, the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat were formed as a consequence of this movement.

Maharashtra Foundation Day: Every year on May 1, this Day, also known as Maharashtra Din, is observed. This auspicious day commemorates the creation of the state of Maharashtra on May 1, 1960, which resulted from the division of Bombay State. On this day, parades, political addresses, and a variety of other public and private events commemorating the history and traditions of Maharashtra are held throughout the state. This day is commemorated with great zeal and enthusiasm to commemorate the state of Maharashtra’s rich heritage.

Maharashtra Foundation Day: Date

Maharashtra and Gujarat were separated from the state of Bombay in 1960 under the States Reorganisation Act of 1956. On this day, 62 years ago, the state of Maharashtra came into existence after significant protests by Marathi-speaking people for a separate state.

History of Maharashtra Din

The States Reorganisation Act of 1956 established state boundaries in India based on language. The Bombay State was established as a result of this act. However, was comprised of distinct regions where distinct languages were spoken, including Marathi, Gujarati, Kutchi, and Konkani. The Sanyukta Maharashtra Samiti was at the forefront of the movement to divide the Bombay State into two states. One was composed of regions where Gujarati and Kutchi were the predominant languages and the other of regions where Marathi and Konkani were the predominant languages.

Significance of this Day:

Since the state was founded on this day, this Day is of significant significance to the state’s Marathi-speaking population. On this day, the sale of alcohol is prohibited throughout the state. On this day, a parade is conducted in Shivaji Park, where every year the Governor of state gives a speech. The first of May is a holiday in Maharashtra. All institutions, offices, and businesses under the jurisdiction of the State and Central Governments are required to organise various celebrations for this holiday.
