6 of top 10 ranks in JEE(A) go to students from the Hyderabad zone: IIT-Hyderabad produced six of the top 10 rankers in JEE (Advanced) 2023, the results of which were announced by IIT-Guwahati (IIT-G) on Sunday morning. In addition to dominating the top 10 list, the Hyderabad zone had the greatest pool of qualified candidates, 10,432.

After the Hyderabad zone, the Delhi zone and the Bombay zone have the largest pool of certified candidates (9,290 and 7,957, respectively). Since 2018, the number of pupils in the open or general category has decreased to 14,006 in 2022, compared to 15,277 in 2018. This has been counterbalanced by a larger proportion of Scheduled Caste candidates who made the mark; SC numbers increased from 7,998 to 11,021, bringing the total number of qualified students to 43,773 as opposed to the previous year’s total of 40,773. In 2023, 1,8 lakh candidates took the JEE (Advanced).

Vavilala Chidvilas Reddy topped the list with a score of 341/360, a significant improvement over the previous year’s all-India leader, who scored 314. Nayakanti Naga Bhavya Sree (AIR 56), also from the IIT Hyderabad zone, is the best female candidate. She received a 298/360. Two candidates from the IIT Delhi and IIT Roorkee zones placed in the top ten. PK Iyer, the official director of IIT-G, called both top students, who expressed interest in pursuing computer science engineering. Nayakanti stated that she may pursue mathematics and computer science.

This year’s minimum qualifying score has increased to 86 from 55 last year. Also for the reserved categories, the minimum qualifying score has increased. Prof. Bishnupada Mandal, organising chairperson for JEE (Advanced) 2023, stated that there were fewer queries with negative markings than in previous years. “This could have led to a higher cut-off for the exam this year,” he said.

In addition, subject-specific qualifying scores have increased after several years of declines. This year, the minimum qualifying score for each subject has been increased from five to eight. Last year, a candidate from the general category who scored 55 out of 360 was eligible for a seat in the IITs, as the qualifying aggregate marks for common rank fell to their lowest level ever.

As the number of IIT seats increased to 17,385 from 16,598 the previous year, the number of qualified applicants also increased. “There are currently 4,455 seats for OBC-NCL, and we need to qualify twice as many students.” This determines the remaining cutoffs, which are 10% lower for SC and ST and 10% higher for the open category, as explained by Mandal. Intriguingly, of the qualified candidates, 26,321 reserved category students with a minimum aggregate score of 86 are on the common merit list.

The announcement of the exam schedule six months in advance, according to the event’s organisers, allowed students to adequately prepare, which substantially improved the results. “By July 28, we anticipate that all BTech and BDes admissions will be complete, and the new cohort will begin the academic year without any delay, similar to pre-Covid times,” Iyer said. Due to exam delays caused by the pandemic, the new academic year began in October of the previous year.

There are 43,773 qualified candidates across India, including 7,509 female candidates. This year, the registration rate for the supernumerary seats for women on college campuses increased to 25 per cent, with 17.2 percent qualifying, their best performance since the additional seats were set aside for them to increase diversity on tech campuses. The extra supernumerary seats have no bearing on the extant seats. 108 international candidates took the JEE (Advanced) in 2023, of which 13 qualified. The highest number of candidates, 67,344, came from the OBC-NCL category (9,212 qualified), followed by 39,808 (14,008 qualified) from the general category and 30,588 (5,438 qualified) from the general (EWS) category.
