A Promising Alternative to Fossil Fuels: Prof. GK Suryaprakash, a world-renowned chemical scientist and the director of the Olah Nobel Laureate Chair at the Loker Hydrocarbon Research Institute at the University of Southern California, stated that methanol is a potential renewable alternative to fossil fuels for combating climate change, particularly to create a methane economy. At GITAM Deemed University’s GITAM School of Science, he delivered a prestigious lecture entitled “A carbon solution to the carbon problem: the methanol economy.”
Prof. Suryaprakash informed the audience that the objective of a methanol-based economy would be to develop renewable energy sources, led by methanol, that could mitigate the issue of climate change caused by carbon emissions. Currently, the globe consumes millions of barrels of oil per day, according to him. “Excessive Co2 emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels have led to an imbalance in the atmosphere. In the foreseeable future, our energy requirements will be met by any viable alternative source, and methanol is one such source. This also provides a practical solution for large-scale energy storage efficiency. Prof. Suryaprakash stated that renewable methanol synthesis from carbon dioxide capture and conversion using water and renewable energies such as solar, wind, geothermal, atomic, etc. is a straightforward long-term solution to the complex greenhouse gas problem of climate change.
GITAM Prof. Dayananda Siddavattam, the principal of the School of Science, Prof. KS Krishna, and the director of faculty development, Prof. GVR Sharma, participated in the event.
