AMU Organises Eye Donation Awareness Programme at Atrauli Inter College

The event also featured a poster exhibition intended to educate attendees on the significance of ocular donation.

Eye Donation Awareness Programme: As part of the celebration of the National Eye Donation Fortnight, ophthalmologists from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) interacted with Atrauli Inter College students.

Dr. Sameen Mirza, a member of the medical staff, educated the audience on the significance of eye donation. He emphasised that only the cornea, the transparent front portion of the eye (commonly referred to as ‘Putli’), is transplanted during the procedure, and that this noble act does not modify the appearance of the deceased.

Professor A.K. Amitava, chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at JN Medical College, AMU, delivered an edifying address in which he urged both students and faculty to become eye donation movement ambassadors.

Dr. M. Saquib, the Assistant Eye Bank Incharge, clarified the reasons for the low rate of eye donations and emphasised that eyes can be donated up to six hours after death, eradicating myths about the donation window.
