AMU signs an MoUToday, the Directorate of Census Operation, Uttar Pradesh, and the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to build a “Census Data Research Workstation” that will be housed in the university’s Maulana Azad Library.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed in the presence of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohammad Gulrez, the Registrar, Mr. Muhammad Imran (IPS), the Deputy Librarian, MAL, Dr. Asif Fareed Siddiqui, the Former Chairman, Department of Statistics and Operations Research, Prof. Qazi Mazhar Ali, and other directors from the directorate.

Professor Muhammad Gulrez stated, “It is a well-known fact that census data is crucial to the creation and oversight of multipurpose developmental plans as well as the assessment of planning. Making the data available to the general public, academics, researchers, students, and data users is therefore crucial.”

According to Dr. SS Sharma, the Government of India is setting up “Census Data Research Workstations” in all of the nation’s reputable universities with the aim of giving academics, researchers, and students access to accurate data and promoting research based on this data.

He said that researchers can access all published census tables and data from the 1991, 2001, and 2011 surveys in digital format at these research workstations. Data users can readily receive various census-related data as well as micro-data for their studies and research from these workstations.

He said that by giving academics and students at AMU access to census microdata for methodical research, this workstation helps them understand the socioeconomic-demographic background of India’s population.

Mr. Mohammad Imran stressed that the neighbouring states as well as the Aligarh district can benefit from the “Census Data Research Workstation” set up at AMU. This is an unusual attempt to improve study on social, economic, and demographic themes by providing instructors, scientists, researchers, students, and other data users with easy access to micro-level census data.

Based on census data, the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India maintains an official website, censusindia.gov.in, through which users can access over 30,000 tables and 8,000 books, maps, summaries, articles, etc. at the workstation.
