The BJP-led state government has issued a notification regarding the dress code, requesting that instructors in higher education institutions refrain from wearing casual attire such as T-shirts, jeans, and leggings while on duty.

According to the government’s official notice, teachers will no longer be permitted to report to work in casual attire. Only formal and conventional attire will be permitted.

“It has come to the attention of the undersigned that certain teachers of the Higher Education Department are in the habit of wearing clothing that does not appear to be acceptable by the general public,” reads a notification issued by the Assam higher education department.

The following are the uniform codes for male and female educators:

For male instructors

Dress blouses and trousers or dhoti-payjama

No denim, leggings, T-shirts, shorts, or other casual attire is permitted.

For female instructors

“Decent” salwar suit/saree/mekhela-chador, as well as other traditional garments

No denim, leggings, T-shirts, shorts, or other casual attire is permitted.

The Assam government has taken this action to promote a “sense of decorum, decency, professionalism, and seriousness of purpose at the workplace.”

“Since a teacher is expected to be a model of all types of decency, particularly while performing their duties, it has become necessary to adhere to a dress code that reflects a sense of decorum, decency, professionalism, and seriousness of purpose at the workplace,” the notification stated.

Both male and female educators have been advised to wear clean, respectable clothing in sober colours that do not appear flashy. They have been instructed to avoid wearing casual or celebration attire.
