The number of women in paramilitary forces is much less than the target. Despite incentives at various levels, the number of women personnel in various forces combined has not reached nearly four per cent, despite the government’s 2016 decision to reserve 33 per cent posts for women in paramilitary forces. It was started by reserving 33 per cent posts in CISF and CRPF and about 15 per cent posts in other forces initially up to the constable level.
According to the data, the number of women jawans has improved as compared to earlier. Women jawans are also joining in adventure missions including several combat and commando squads. But there is still a long way to go in terms of total numbers. Women constitute 3.18 percent in CRPF, 3 percent in BSF, 6.3 percent in CISF, 2.83 percent in ITBP, 4.12 percent in SSB and 3.01 percent in Assam Rifles. The percentage of women in all the forces together is about 3.68 percent.

The government says that due to reasons like dangerous working conditions and distance from family, women have not been able to come forward as expected. However, every effort is being made to give equal opportunities to women as to men. Also, they are being encouraged in different ways. Looking at the data, it was also found that the number of women in senior positions is also very less.
