She urged them to relax and gave them assurances about their safety and security while on campus.

Student’s induction programme: The “Deeksharambh” Student Induction-cum-Bonding Programme (SIP) 2023–24 was organised by the English Department at Aligarh Muslim University for newly admitted MA (English), MA (English Language Teaching), and BA (English/Communicative English students.

Prof. Samina Khan, Coordinator of the Student Induction Programme, welcomed the new students and emphasised the concept of “gender championship,” noting that female students shouldn’t feel uncomfortable in their new surroundings.

She urged them to relax and gave them assurances about their safety and security while on campus. She claimed that numerous organisations, including the Internal Complaints Committee, Anti-Ragging Committee, Grievance Redressal Committee, and the Proctor’s Office, are in place at the university to ensure students’ safety. She also claimed that the university favours preventative action over punitive action.

Sir Syed Ahmed Khan’s vision and aim in founding this esteemed school were mentioned by Prof. Mohammad Asim Siddiqui, Chairman of the Department. He emphasised the value of academic honesty and integrity as well as the role that active involvement in community activities, both on and off campus, plays in helping students develop as people.

He exhorted them to participate in athletic activities in order to fully develop themselves, as well as the mental and physical health of the kids. Additionally, he emphasised the need of in-person instruction and exhorted pupils to attend class frequently.

Prof. Seemin Hasan thanked the students for choosing the course and emphasised the importance of the humanities as a discipline and how it affects people’s lives significantly. She emphasised the background of the English department as well as the significance of the Raleigh Literary Society in fostering students’ literary interests. To “speak out and discuss problems with teachers, listen to them contentedly, read a lot, assimilate knowledge, and never let failure overpower them as it is the best feedback,” was her advice to the students.

The significance of English Teaching Language as a field and the variety of its applications were emphasised by Prof. Shagufta Imtiaz. She urged the students to communicate with different departments so they could develop a multidisciplinary understanding of ELT.

Professors Sami Rafiq, Jawed S. Ahmed, and Raashid Nehal also spoke to the group, emphasising and inspiring the students to learn, develop, and become informed citizens.

The faculty members and the areas of their specialisation were introduced in a PowerPoint presentation developed by research students.

The convener, Dr. Md. Saquib Abrar, gave a vote of thanks.
