In order to provide educational options for the brave individuals serving in the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has made an important move. IGNOU recently signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the three armed forces in order to provide Agniveers with Bachelor degree programmes. On the official website, ignou.ac.in, the application procedure is currently available.

Courses

Five skill-based courses for the Agniveers have been introduced as a result of the partnership between IGNOU and the Armed Forces:

  • Bachelor of Arts (Applied Skills), abbreviated BAAS.
  • Bachelor of Arts with Applied Skills (BAASTM) Vacationer Management
  • Bachelor of Arts (Applied Skills): BAASMSME MSME
  • Bachelor of Commerce (Applied Skills) abbreviated BCOMAS
  • Bachelor of Science (Applied Skills), abbreviated BSCAS.

These programmes offer a distinctive fusion of skill-based and discipline-based training. Each programme requires 120 credits in total, of which IGNOU provides 60 through its courses and the remaining 60 through the Armed Forces’ in-service skill education.

The National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET), the governing body for skill education, has given its approval to the skill courses provided by the Armed Forces. Additionally, these activities support the National Education Policy 2020’s proposals, which aim to combine higher education with skill development.

The partnership aims to empower the Agniveers by giving them the opportunity to work towards a Bachelor’s degree while actively participating in the military. following completing these skill-based training, it is anticipated that the Agniveers’ employability will greatly increase following their service term.

Inaugural ceremonies for the admission process for Agnivesers from the Indian Air Force were held on August 1, 2023, at the IGNOU Campus. An customised Admission Portal created especially for the Agniveers was launched at the occasion. Pro vice chancellors, directors of schools and divisions, regional directors of every regional centre, and senior Indian Air Force officials all supported the plan.
