International Disability Day: The Aligarh Muslim University commemorated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by holding a number of awareness-raising events at various campuses and institutes.
More than 200 students and volunteers attended an awareness session that the Disability Unit arranged to raise awareness of the socio-political and economic advancement of individuals with disabilities and to support the welfare of students with impairments.
The chief guest, Prof. Mohammed Gulrez, vice chancellor of AMU, emphasised the need of providing improved accommodations for students with disabilities and listed a number of upgrading initiatives for them. He promised them better surroundings and amenities.
Later, 33 PWD students received wheelchairs, tricycles, smart sticks, recorders, hearing aids, headphones, and other accommodations from Prof. Gulrez and his honoured guests, Prof. Abdul Alim, Dean of Students’ Welfare, and Mr. Saad Hameed, Training and Placement Officer. Provost Dr. Abdus Samad of VM Hall helped distribute the equipment.

Prof. Abdul Alim praised the Disability Unit’s services and emphasised the scholarships offered to qualifying students.
In order to gain a better grasp of employment prospects, Mr. Saad Hameed recommended the PWD students to take part in career counselling sessions. He promised to assist and support them in all of their future professional aspirations, promising a job fair in the near future along with a five-day programme on personality development.
The Disability Unit Coordinator, Prof. Manvendra Kumar Pundhir, welcomed the guests earlier and gave a report on the accomplishments of the unit, including the upgrading and modification of the reservation roster, the creation of an equal opportunity policy, the appointment of a grievance redressal officer, and the creation of a grievance redressal committee.
The activity was run by student volunteers Rahul Upadhyay and Madhiya Nihar, and a vote of gratitude was given by Dr. Shagufta Niyazi, a counsellor with the Disability Unit.
Dr. Naghma Azhar from the Department of Commerce was the guest speaker at Ahmadi School for the Visually Challenged. She spoke extensively about the problems and difficulties faced by students with physical disabilities as well as strategies for resolving them. The school’s principal, Dr. Naila Rashid, welcomed her. The pupils received gifts as a surprise and showcased their talents.
