Isabella Thoburn alumna and former NCC cadet set to become IAF officer: Sanchita Singh, a 23-year-old former NCC cadet of the 19 UP Girls Battalion Lucknow Group and alumna of Isabella Thoburn College, has passed the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) and will depart for the Air Force Academy, Hyderabad, next month to begin her 52-week rigorous training to become an Indian AirForce officer.

Sanchita, who comes from the isolated village of Tulsipur in the Balrampur district, attended school in the state capital and then earned a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science from IT College.

Sanchita credited NCC as being the driving reason behind her decision to enlist in the militarySanchita credited NCC as being the driving reason behind her decision to enlist in the military, saying, “During my first year at IT college, I came across a circular on the notice board that said the opportunity to join national cadet corps, so I enlisted and actively engaged in it. I felt a sense of unity among the corps members, which encouraged me to apply for the IAF.

Sanchita, the second youngest of four siblings, joined the NCC in 2017 and marched in the republic day parade with the NCC contingent in 2020.

Sanchita, who joined the military after two failed attempts, said, “My father Pramendra Kumar Singh is a farmer and mother Neelam Singh is a housewife. I feel happy to be the first from my family to join the armed forces. Along with 26 other females, she applied for 5 AFSB Guwahati in November 2022, but she was the only one who received a recommendation for IAF duty.

The 19 UP Girls Battalion NCC Lucknow held a ceremony of congratulations for Sanchita on Tuesday to recognise her accomplishment.
In the presence of Colonel Deepak Kumar, Commanding Officer of the 19 UP Girls Battalion NCC Lucknow, she was honoured by Brigadier Neeraj Punetha, Group Commander, Lucknow Group Headquarters.

Cadet Manu Tiwari from the 19 UP Girls Battalion NCC was chosen for Naval Agniveer earlier this year, while officer Azad Singh Chauhan from the 5 UP Air NCC was chosen through the Army SSB (service selection board) and is currently completing his training at the Chennai-based OTA (Officers Training Academy).
