Lakshadweep education department announces CBSE English medium switch

From the academic year 2024-25, all schools under the department will exclusively accept CBSE English medium students.

Lakshadweep’s Department of Education has decided to switch all of its schools from Malayalam to CBSE English, representing a significant shift in the state’s educational system. On December 12, the union territory’s director of education issued an order.

“To elevate the standards of education and align with the dynamic educational landscape, the Department of Education, union territory of Lakshadweep, has resolved to transition SCERT Kerala Malayalam medium classes to CBSE English medium,” the order said.

From the academic year 2024-25, all schools under the department will exclusively accept CBSE English medium students.

The order elaborated on the rationale behind the transition to the new medium, stating that it is intended to furnish students with vital knowledge and abilities that will serve them well in their future scholarly and vocational endeavors. It acknowledged the significant contribution of the CBSE curriculum in equipping students for competitive assessments and 21st-century competencies.

Furthermore, it was stated that the SCERT (State Council of Education Research and Training) class currently taught in Malayalam would be converted to the CBSE English medium, which covers grades 2 through 8.

Director of Education Rakesh Dahiya additionally stated in the directive that the transition from traditional to CBSE English medium instruction for grades 9 and 10 will be methodically carried out over two years.

It was stated that measures would be taken to ensure that the ongoing board examination experiences only minimal disruption.

The prescribed parameters of the new education policy will govern the provision of instruction in English, Malayalam, and Hindi, all three languages.

The directive stipulates that the three-language policy shall be implemented in grades one through twelve.

“This approach ensures comprehensive learning of the three languages and alleviates the burden on students, preventing the necessity to learn more than three languages during their school studies,” it said.

With effect from the academic year 2024-25, all principals have been directed to initiate the necessary preliminary arrangements for the migration process of schools and associated resources.

According to the order, a regular update on the progress of these arrangements is also required from the principals to the Director of Education.
