Law fest held at AMU Malappuram Centre

Law fest held at AMU: Asjad Alam and Yash Jain’s team took first place in the legal trivia contest that was part of the law festival “Lex Justicia 2K23,” which was put on by the Law Society, Department of Law, Aligarh Muslim University Malappuram Centre, Kerala.

Mohd Zulqarnain and Shayaque Zafar’s team won the second place, and Arshad Khan and Shadan Ali Farooque’s team took home the third place.

The event was overseen by Mr. Ghulam Ashraf Touquir, Quiz Club Secretary, and Mr. Apoorva Chandra, Joint Secretary.

The team of Mohd Asif and Saeed Masroor came in third, followed by the team of Arshad Jilani and Shadan Ali Farooque in the “Client Counselling Competition” competition.

The event was overseen by Arfeen Masood, Joint Secretary of the Debate Club, and Muskan Khan, Joint Secretary.

The Client Counselling Competition, with the theme “Offences against Women,” aimed to increase awareness of and interest in preventative law and counselling among law students. In order to successfully manage the lawyer-client relationship, it also aimed to help students strengthen their interviewing, planning, and analytical skills. Twenty teams, each with two members, took part in the competition.

The Women Reservation Bill 2023 was presented by the Youth Parliament, with Mr Shamim Akhtar serving as Deputy Speaker and Dr Shahnawaz Ahmed Malik serving as Speaker.

While an active Opposition critically analysed many parts of the Amendment Bill and provided a thorough critique of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam 2023, Asjad Alam submitted the 108th Amendment Bill, which would have provided a new framework for the rights of women.

A team of judges, consisting of Drs. Azmat Ali, Raghul V. Rajan, Imran Ahmed, and Bilal Ahmed Sheikh, judged the performance of the participants. Ms. Fathima S. served as the event’s host.

29 contestants demonstrated their skills in the “Letter to Chief Justice” portion by responding to various legal challenges. With the help of the competition, prospective solicitors were given a venue to discuss important legal issues. The class had 45 minutes to write their letters.

This portion was overseen by Zoya Khan Joint Secretary and Legal Writing Club Secretary Nayela Raies.

Dr. Shahnawaz Ahmed Malik, Director Incharge, AMU Malappuram Centre and Coordinator, Department of Law, stated earlier at the opening session that the Law Society has been playing a significant role in giving the young students the necessary training to become good lawyers, judges, and academics.

The opening session was presided over by Mr. Mohd. Ahazam Khan, Assistant Registrar, who emphasised the value of practical skills and advised the law students to create case studies and previous judgements to get practical knowledge.

The schedule of the Law Fest events, including the Legal Quiz, Youth Parliament, Letter to the Chief Justice, PIL Drafting, and Client Counselling, was presented by Mr. Azam Khan, Vice President of the Law Society.

The Law Society’s conveners, Drs. Deeba Khanam and Shally Victor, praised the members’ work in planning the Lex Justicia. She stated that the Law Society’s goal is to support, uphold, and advance the values of justice and the rule of law among law students.
