New School Syllabus for Classes 3-12: NCERT forms committee to develop school syllabus, textbooks for Classes 3-12

New School Syllabus for Classes 3-12: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has established a high-powered committee called The National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC) with Princeton University professor Prof. Manjul Bhargava serving as co-chair. The committee’s mission is to create the school curriculum, textbooks, and study materials for Classes 3-12.

In accordance with an NCERT notification from July 21st, “As a follow-up to the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), development of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE 2023) was initiated with the constitution of the National Steering Committee vide MOE OM No. 11-2/2019 dated September 21, 2021.” The NCF-SE is currently in the advanced phases of development and will serve as a guide and roadmap for those creating curricula and textbooks for school education across the nation, according to the statement.

New School Syllabus for Classes 3-12: Committee Development

“In this context, a High-Powered Committee, the National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC) is empowered to develop the school curriculum and textbooks and teaching learning materials for Classes 3-12,” NCERT notification added.

Dr. Sudha Murty, Chairperson of the Infosys Foundation, Shankar Mahadevan, Musician, of Mumbai, and Ranjana Arora, Member Secretary of the NCERT, are the other members of the High Power Committee.

The committee’s mandate is that all curricular areas and the subjects contained within them, as well as their supporting resources like teacher handbooks, will be covered by the textbooks and other teaching and learning materials.

“The textbooks and other teaching learning materials developed and finalised by the NSTC shall be published and distributed by the NCERT,” the announcement stated.

NCERT plans to provide new Maths textbook in 22 Indian languages

The ‘Curricular Area Groups’ (CAGs) will help The NSTC generate textbooks and other teaching resources for each of the courses covered by the curriculum, according to a later NCERT statement. The CAGS would be formed by the Chairperson and Co-Chairperson of the NSTC with the assistance of NCERT and the necessary experts. The NSTC shall be free to consult with, support, and seek advice from other specialists as needed.

The notification continued, “The NCERT will support the NSTC through a Programme Office established by the NCERT and NCERT shall provide all necessary expertise and support as per the needs of the NSTC.”

The “NCF Oversight Committee” (NOC) shall be composed of a few members of the National Steering Committee, the Mandate Group for the “National Curriculum Frameworks,” and other pertinent specialists, according to the notification.

In addition, according to the NCERT notification, the NOC will support a rigorous connection between the textbooks and LTMs being prepared.  As a follow-up to the NCF-SE, including a thorough orientation of the NCF-SE to NSTC and all CAGs and continued participation as needed throughout the development process. Separate notifications are being sent to the NOC members.
