NIOS and IMA jointly introduce new specialisations: The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) will collaborate to enhance the paramedical curriculum. In 2011, a course was introduced jointly that invited as many as 4,000 students, including a number of working professionals who subsequently obtained employment as paramedics.

A few additional subjects will be added to the paramedical courses as part of a new MoU signed by NIOS and IMA. This program’s new specialisations include Radiography (X-Ray Technician), Medical Imaging Technology, and a variety of Medical Laboratory Technology specialisations.
There are currently 55, 37, and 58 Accredited Vocational Institutes (AVIs) with NIOS that offer Diploma programmes in Radiography, Medical Imaging Technology, and Medical Laboratory Technology, respectively. Students will be exposed to subjects such as artificial limb implantation technology, Radiology, Optometry, Radiotherapy, Radiography Medical Imaging, and many others that will be recognised by IMA while pursuing these courses.
The chairman of NIOS, Saroj Sharma, told Education Times, “We will be able to increase the number of qualified paramedics through this NIOS course. Students who have completed the 12th grade Science curriculum with Biology as a required subject may also enrol in these courses. It is part of the ongoing effort to broaden access to vocational courses, which is also in line with the goals of NEP 2020.”
Since 2011, NIOS and IMA have collaborated to devise a number of paramedical courses; the new courses will feature a number of innovative specialisations to support the paramedical industry. “The new six-month courses will include competency-based curriculum components based on input from physicians, which will stimulate the analytical skills of students and working professionals,” said Sharma.
