The Calcutta High Court’s division bench chief justice gave permission to bring a public interest lawsuit on ragging at educational institutions. Legal representative Sayan Banerjee filed the PIL. This week’s hearing on the topic is anticipated.

PIL Against Ragging: The Actual Case

Swarnodip Kundu, a first-year student at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University, passed away on Thursday after allegedly falling from the hostel’s balcony on Wednesday.

On Sunday morning, two more students were detained in connection with the student death case at Jadavpur University, bringing the total number of arrests to three, according to police.

The suspect has been named as Deepsekhar Dutta (19), a second-year economics student at the university and a resident of the Bankura neighbourhood. According to the police, the arrest was made on Sunday morning.

Manotosh Ghosh, a 20-year-old sociology student in his second year and a resident of Hooghly, has been named as the second suspect to be detained.

Sourav Chowdhury, a former university student who was the third person to be detained, was presented before a municipal court on August 12 and was remanded to police custody until August 22.

The hostel was visited by West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Thursday, who promised swift action and the administration of justice.

After touring the university residence hall, the governor addressed the media, saying, “I went to the hostel, I talked with the students… and also the teachers, and they want justice. The law will be followed. They laid out some of the fundamental problems for me. We’ll deal with them. We’ll try our best to make things right and take decisive action.
