Proposal for Supplementary Exams: Chhattisgarh considers granting supplementary exams for students failing in two subjects

It is expected that an agreement will be reached on the format of these additional tests in two subjects.

Proposal for Supplementary Exams: In response to the growing demand of students who have failed in two subjects, all public universities have given verbal consent to conduct supplementary examinations. The Higher Education, Government of Chhattisgarh is considering giving this short term relief for one session. If approved, it will benefit about 80,000 students across the state.

The state government has already constituted a committee, which has held two or three meetings. In the next two days, another meeting is planned to change the rules of the university so that students who have not passed two subjects can take additional exams. Currently, the rules allow students who fail in one subject to take supplementary exams, but if they fail in multiple subjects, the student must retake the entire exam. An official present at the committee meeting at Mantralaya on Thursday told TOI that the state government supports the students’ demand and a formal order is expected to be issued in the next day or two. The official explained that this relaxation is for one academic session.

Thoughts on Proposal for Supplementary Exams

Prof. Sachchidananda Shukla, Vice-Chancellor, Pt Ravishankar Shukla University (PRSU), said, “All the universities verbally accepted a large number of students who failed their B.A. examinations. This led to the formation of a committee by the state government. , which has already held several meetings.” The committee could make a final decision on the matter in the next day or two. In my opinion, students should be given this opportunity. Considering the impact of Covid-19 on all sectors, including education, students are still recovering from the situation. Philosophically I would recommend this adjustment for a year, but no longer.

This temporary adjustment is in response to the recent transition from online surveys, which have been conducted for three years due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, to offline surveys. According to the vice-chancellor, this change significantly affected the research results. Universities like Pandit Ravishankar Shukla University, Hemchand Yadav University Durgi, Bilaspur University and Raigarh University reported comparatively lower results.

Statics of Failed Students

A significant number of students who faced academic challenges struggled in two subjects. Approximately 80,000 students are expected to benefit from the extension of the right to additional exams to two subjects. These students have the opportunity to participate in future exams. The current regulations governing the graduation and graduation procedures of state universities allow for additional examinations in one subject. However, the next amendment to these rules will expand the scope of supplementary examinations by two subjects. A total of 125,463 students participated in the three-year graduation program in conjunction with the PRSU annual exams. Of these, 48,925 students achieved an acceptable grade and 50,767 students faced challenges. Out of 48,925 failed students, 24,542 students who failed in one subject were admitted to supplementary exams.

Conclusion on Proposal for Supplementary Exams

A similar trend can be seen in other public universities like Durg University, Bilaspur University, Sarguja University, Bastar University and Raigarh University, where around 80,000 students struggled in two subjects this academic year. In the 1990s, PRSU graduate students were allowed to take additional exams in two subjects. However, this rule was later changed to allow supplementary examinations in case of failure in only one subject. The university has drawn up proposals for amendments. A meeting of the Vice-Chancellor and other relevant officials was called on Thursday to discuss the details of this proposed amendment. It is expected that an agreement will be reached on the format of these additional tests in two subjects. Subsequently, this change will be submitted to the Chancellor for final approval.
